David Wood was a 62 year old helicopter pilot who died in an accident in Antarctica.  He was working for an Australian company and delivering fuel on the West Ice Shelf on Monday evening when he and another pilot landed to retrieve the equipment.

Wood fell into a crevasse and the other pilot was unable to help him.  The other pilot radioed for help and flew the 45 minutes back to the Davis Station to get someone to come back to help  him. After about 3 hours, they were able to pull him up and fly him to Davis Station medical facility.

After receiving care from the station specialist and telemedicine, Wood passed away.

David Wood, who had more than 30 years experience as a pilot, was said to be respected by friends, family and colleagues.
